Hi Maliha,

Okay, so here is how it works in Alberta. You register your child with a non-resident school board. These school boards are set up specifically to help homeschoolers.

We use Education Unlimited - http://educationunlimited.ca - get in touch with them and they can help you out.

The registration deadline is September 30th, so call them ASAP!

Well, I have never heard of someone not being approved for homeschooling :). It is up to YOU as the parent where you register your child, you can register them for homeschooling with a non-resident board or for public school with a traditional school board, but I don't think it's a matter of approval, only of notifying the government through your non-residents chool board that you intend to homeschool.

Now, some non-resident school boards only take families from certain parts of Alberta, others take from all over the province, so just ask. But yes, you get to choose the non-resident school board you choose.

Let me know if you need more help :).

Hi. Thanks for posting this info. I have a first grader already in school. I am thinking home school for him. I am in Alberta. I am only worried because I know they might say no. So what are the reasons that people don't get approved for homeschooling, and can you choose the school board that you would like to approve you regardless of where you live? I saw a list of home school school boards in Alberta somewhere, are these actual school boards that can approve you for homeschooling?

We have used some of A Beka's materials for reading. I really like their Handbook for Reading and their leveled readers are really excellent for building up budding readers and practicing those phonics skills! This was the CORE of our reading program with my oldest daughter. That is the extent of my experience with them though :).

I am in Alberta. I'm 15 minutes east of Edmonton.I have three girls (5,4,3) and two boys (21mon, 6mon). Have you heard of the Abeka curriculums? I was given k-6 and can't wait to start them.

Nice to meet you too!

Hi Crystal!

Are you in Alberta?

If you are you can't get funding (or need to register until next year for your oldest. We were so eager to get started with our oldest (we're now about to start our third year - she's 8), but we had to wait. Same with our second - we are doing K level work with her, but she has to wait until next year to register - she turned 5 in April!

Do you have boys, girls, or a mix? :) We have four girls so far, 8 and under. We are 45 minutes north of Edmonton. Glad the post helped! And glad to meet you!

Woohoo! Thank you sooo much for this post! I have been looking for information on homeschooling for a while now and your post was just the thing I needed. For starting dates, my eldest turned 5 on May so that means she can't start until next year (for funding anyways)? Different subject, I didn't know there was a quiverfull movement and just found out about this last year. My hubby and I have 5 beautiful children 5 and under all planned by God. I'm excited to find other who have been doing this.

Correction to previous email

In regards to my previous email, I want to correct myself and make my statement more clear.

"Wherever there is funding there are strings. Funding gives the government control to TIGHTEN those strings overnight or over time."

We're thinking of moving to Alberta and I'm looking into the laws there. Thank you for your informative article. I must say, here in BC we have funding for the enrolled home educator and nothing for the registered homeschooler, but we prefer it that way. Wherever there is funding, there are strings and you give the government control to lift those strings overnight or over time. If you could register as a traditional Alberta home educator and refuse the funding (trusting in God to provide) then you'd be better off as a province and the government would more likely leave home education alone, but if everyone wants to continue to receive hand-outs and have as little accountability as possible, things could very well change for our grandchildren. I want home education to be an option for generations to come, as it could be the port-hole in which God will change the direction of our nation.

Right on Patty. We just finished our first registered year as traditional, and are registered for our second as traditional as well :). Since writing this post I've actually become aware of some 'gray' areas in terms of matching up blended programs with what the gov't considers blended. There's some discrepancies there.

I'm definitely with you though - my kids, my choice!

We are also in Alberta and I am very grateful for the $750 per child that we get for traditional homeschooling. Our facilitator is pushing us towards blended since our standards match up already so we can get more funding, but I am not willing to give up control of my children's education for some more money.
