Phys. Ed at 30 Below

So, what do you do in Canada when you have winter for six months of the year and it’s often -30 C?  How do you keep your children active?  Sure – they run around the house nearly all day long, but when your house is 600 sq. ft. there isn’t much running space to be had!

For our family, children’s exercise videos are a blessing.  Tonight my toddler was aching to exercise.  She brought me our children’s exercise video and handed it to me.  “Excise, excise Momma!”, she said with sparkling eyes.  So, exercise we did!  My second oldest is 2.5-years-old, my oldest is 5.5-years-old.  A 25 minute exercise video is too long for my toddler to hang in there, but my 5 year old goes all the way to the end.

“We should do this every-day Mom.” She said excitedly as she wiggled and waggled herself all over.

Even baby had fun as we bounced around together, though not too vigourously – heaven forbid we get that shaken baby syndrome!

Parental participation is essential for children to buy into this winter time phys-ed activity.  Get up with them and move around, they love it!  No fancy equipment needed, just a DVD player and you’re good to go in any weather.

I know this likely isn’t the most creative solution for phys-ed, but it is easy, inexpensive and can be done in ALL weather…even -40 below C (yes, we did have that over the weekend).

Enjoy moving with your children!
