Using WIC? Changes for Formula

We’ve been blessed to be able to fully breastfeed all three of our children..well I have I guess – DH wasn’t ‘directly’ involved :) .  Following my first post on this topic I found that many moms who have needed to use formula with their babies feel very misunderstood and often guilt-laden.  For my part, I’m very sorry if I’ve contributed to these sorts of feelings amongst moms who have a hard time nursing.  In the past I’ve been far more hard-core about nursing, but this is a fallen world, and sometimes moms on heavy-duty antidepressants can’t for the health of their baby, are anatomically ill-equipped and so on.

During these tough financial times, moms using the WIC program in the US should know that starting October 1/09 a change in the allocation of funds could result in a reduction of 20% in the funds allocated for the purchase of infant formula.  With some low-income parents needing to purchase larger amounts of their own formula it’s reassuring to know that ALL baby formula needs to pass government regulations in order to be sold.  There is a basic nutritional standard that must be met whether it’s store brand formula or an expensive, heavily marketed brand.  One needn’t feel neglectful for purchasing a more affordable brand of formula to feed their babe!
