Don’t Pitch That Machine!

I’m sure you already know, but folks just aren’t encouraged to pitch their computer in the dump.  As a mater of fact, you are even required to pay special recycling fees at the time that you purchase a new computer (at least you need to here in Canada).  Want to learn more about computer recycling? Round2 is a major provider of electronics recycling services, so you can learn a lot from their website.

Book Review: Treasured: Knowing God by the Things He Keeps by Leigh McLeroy

Treasured by Leigh McLeroy is a book of devotional insights that follows the author through some of the major stories and events of the Bible, picking out a key object from each story (a fig leaf, Abraham’s knife, a smooth stone etc.) and uses those objects to illustrate God’s love and care for us. McLeroy also brings her own life’s experiences alongside each of her reflections on the objects she has chosen from each story.

There are thirteen short chapters that make for brisk devotional reading. A discussion guide is also included which would lend itself well to use in a small group setting. This is a book that is best for newer believers – within their first year or two of birth into God’s family. Many of the stories and insights are fairy simple, and most Christians who have been in the faith for more than a couple of years will be familiar with the major points that McLeroy is making.

In all honesty, this isn’t a title that I can picture myself buying for our own collection, but it might make a good gift for a new believer who is just starting to learn about God, his history, and how Christians relate to Him in their daily lives.

Birth Injuries

My heart really goes out to the parents of little ones who have been permanently damaged during the birth and delivery process.  Thankfully parents of children with Cerebral Palsy can find a lot of good support online. Reading their stories makes me even more thankful for our four uneventful home-births.

Book Review: Rose House by Tina Ann Forkner

therosehouseWhen Lillian found herself plunged into grief at the sudden loss of her husband and children she retreated to a beautiful place of hope – the Rose House in the Sonoma’s wine country. Returning to the Rose House four years later she finds a painting revealing her deep feelings in those wretched moments from her past. Suddenly she finds herself followed by strangers, plagued by confessions from her estranged sister, and swept into an unexpected romance.

Rose House is the second in a loosely connected series of novels tied to the Rose House, the Sonoma valley, and the families who live there. The first in this series is the widely acclaimed Ruby Among Us (which I have not read). This book can easily be read as a stand-alone though.

I was drawn to Rose House by the mystery of the story – who had painted Lillian? How had they witnessed her secret grief? Was this a God thing? Unfortunately what I found was a choppy and confusing story. Tina Ann Forkner jumps around in time and space during the early portions of the book in a way that was hard for me to follow. It took me awhile to understand the backstory because it was revealed so slowly and jumpily.

I also found Lillian’s emerging romance somewhat unbelievable – I actually thought her love interest had very strange stalker, obsessive-type qualities. I really couldn’t understand why she would go in for that (I certainly wouldn’t).

This was my first exposure to Forkner’s work and though I can’t say for certain what I was searching for (it was the nebulous mystery that drew me in), I can’t shake the sense if disappointment I felt after finishing this novel.

What Makes an Orthodontist a Hipster?

Apparently these Austin orthodontists are hipsters, but I’m not sure how you can tell from their website. Is it because they use lower case letters in their menus? The modern web page design? The invisible braces? I can’t tell, but they do have very neat before and after photos if you are into that! (I find it…morbidly fascinating for some reason.)

Ouch, That Hurts!

There seems to be a fairly steady stream of folks in need of personal injury lawyers these days.  I know our local yellow pages always has very large ads for personal injury law firms like this one that specializes in St Louis personal injury.  A few of my relatives have even successfully won settlements after they had been physically damaged due to negligence.

Book Review: God Wants to Hear You Sing! by Ruthie Jacobsen with Rodney Griffin

godwantstohearyousingIn God Wants to Hear You Sing! accomplished author Ruthie Jacobsen joins hands with prolific song-writer Rodney Griffin, a member of the southern gospel trio Greater Vision. In its pages, the pair shares how the songs of Greater Vision have touched listeners, reminding them of scriptural truths and drawing them nearer to the heart of the gospel. Inspirational stories of spiritual growth, the power to witness, and the strength to rejoice in suffering are all recounted here.

When I accepted a copy of God Wants to Hear You Sing! for review I had never heard of the musical group Greater Vision. The book I received includes an offer to download the songs that go along with the inspirational stories in the book for free, or to order a CD and pay for the shipping. I have also seen the accompanying CD available for purchase separately on other websites and it now looks as though the CD is actually included with the book.

What I did found is that while the stories were touching, the southern gospel genre isn’t one of my favorites. Though Greater Vision is a highly regarded group within that genre, I found the sound a bit old-fashioned and to be honest, quite slow, though I did enjoy the scriptural messages behind their music.  The music also has a very rich, full-bodied traditional sound – it reminds me a bit of music that I heard my grandparents enjoying when I was a child.  That being said this collection is best as a gift for those who already enjoy Greater Vision’s work. Having a collection of life-changing stories that were inspired by the music of a group whose work you enjoy would surely be a wonderful gift for those who enjoy this style of music more than I do.

It’s Not a Local World Anymore!

Web marketing, website design, and mobile site design are not regional businesses.  That’s why I think it is interesting that an SEO firm would choose a geographic designation as part of their url, like TahoeSEO.net has done.  I suppose that some people still think in terms of geography when looking for internet services, but I have worked with web professionals from a wide variety of locales.  I’m thankful that the internet has made contracting with service provides far and wide so much easier!

Dell Coupon Codes

I have to admit – my family is absolutely dedicated to using Mac products.  We don’t have a lot of use for Dell coupon codes, but we do have family members and friends who are as equally devoted to the Dell brand (don’t ask me why, because I don’t entirely understand it myself.)

It seems that there are quite a few Dell fans out there though, because websites that offer Dell coupons seem to be multiplying. There are quite a variety of websites out there that offer various Dell coupons, so it is worth your time to pre-shop for the coupon codes that will best serve you if you plan on buying from Dell.

Whether you are looking for promo codes, free shipping deals, Dell computer coupons, or discount Dell computers, you might want to take a peek at DellaDeals.com and see if they might have a coupon code that can help you out.  We all know that when raising a family, every bit that we can save helps, particularly if you are living on a single income or are self-employed (like we are!)

And no worries – if you are a passionate Dell devotee I certainly won’t hold it against you ;) .

Welcome!
