Readee Me Mommy…

Such sweet words to the ear of a bibliophile and Mother.  I’ve never had early talkers, my youngest turned 2 in April, and she is now starting to speak in complete sentences and phrases.  One of the earliest to surface, as well as one of the most oft repeated is “Readee me Mommy!”, often repeated two to three times in rapid succession if I don’t respond quickly.

At times this request is followed by the title of a book “Readee me Mommy, JeeJee lubs bee (Jesus Loves Me).”  Sometimes it is the title of the book that is repeated several times, accompanied by book waving in the air.  The incessant demands can become a bit trying, but above all else, I’m thrilled that she has discovered the delights to be found in books, and that their value is already well established in her life.

I am a dyed in the wool reader, which makes me suspect that my parents must have read to me often as a small child, though I have only sporadic memories of this taking place.  Both of my parents love books, and I have followed in their example.  Fostering this love of literature in my own children has proven to be surprisingly simple: regular storytimes scattered throughout the day, consistent bedtime stories and devotionals each and every night, books within easy access of little hands.  Before I knew it my children were entertaining themselves by ‘reading’ books without me.  Just sitting on the floor, quietly leafing through books to look at the pictures, sometimes stopping to ask me questions.  My oldest daughter, K - 5, pointing out pictures and events in storybooks to her younger sister.

How have you fostered a love for reading in your tiny ones?  What are the fruits of your efforts that you are now seeing in their lives?  Please share in the comments of your adventures with literature and children!

No Funding This Year, Homeschooling in Alberta

Quick note: Are you a homeschooler in Canada?  If so, you should visit the Canadian Home Educators Blog Carnival!  Their blog features a weekly visit through Canadian homeschooling blogs.  This week the deadline for submissions is May 26th, so head on over :).

On to the post!

Here in the province of Alberta we are blessed to receive funding from the provincial government for our children’s education if we choose to home educate.  In Canada education is governed provincially, and the regulations are different from province to province.  I think this is similar to the U.S. where the individual States get to make decisions regarding education.

In Alberta we are required by law to register our children with a school board, whether or not they attend a physical school.  So, willing non-resident school boards have been established specifically for homeschoolers to register their children with.  A facilitator from the school board normally meets with your family twice a year to monitor progress. This meeting can be in your home, or at their office, depending upon your board.  Funding levels also vary from board to board and option to option.

In Alberta you can register your children as ‘fully provided’, meaning that you are striving to meet the provincial educational standards and guidelines in your homeschool.  Legally, this is the same as if your children were attending school, and you were their teacher.  You are required to help them meet the Alberta standards.  You can register as ‘blended’, similar to fully, but more flexible, you do not need to meet the Alberta standards in every subject area.  Or you can register as ‘traditional’ - this means that you are not necessarily trying to meet the standards of the province, but rather are home educating your children as you see fit.  Legally this is the true, classical idea of homeschooling, and your rights can be defended as a homeschooler legally by an association such as HSLDA (Canada).  As you can imagine, registering as ‘traditional’ allows you the greatest freedom in your homeschool, facilitator evaluations will be much more flexible and casual etc.

Now, all this being said, we aren’t yet registered with a school board.  Our oldest daughter, K, was 5 in April, but in order to receive funding for her, she would have needed to be 5 at the end of February.  Sorry K - you’ll have to wait until next year for those funds!  For some reason I was under the impression (last year) that we could qualify for funding this year.  Sadly, I was wrong!  What can I say, I am gung-ho to buy neat resources for my daughter!  Of course we still spend money on educational materials for our children regardless of funding!  We do have a board I’m keeping in mind for next year though - Education Unlimited.  They support parental choices and sovereignty in their child’s education, I’m all for that.  In case you are wondering, this year funding is around $700/eligible child that is registered as ‘traditional’.  ‘Fully provided’ students can receive $900/eligible child with some boards.  However, that $200 isn’t worth the compromise of my own plans (and Christ’s!) in my children’s education.

Likely more than you ever wanted to know about Alberta homeschooling regulations, but there you go!

Learning Can Be/Is Easy

With preschoolers so much learning comes naturally, through life experiences. One day you find that you are learning phonics by pointing to letters and saying the sound, and your child naturally repeats it. The next day you’ll hear your child crying excitedly from the back seat, “Look Mommy, it’s a ’sssssssss’!”, and pointing wildly, so proud of her recognition skills.

When reading a story aloud to your children you find their queries about new vocabulary words penetrating and insistent, “Mommy, what does ‘diverse’ mean?”, “Mommy, what does ‘unique’ mean?” Reading aloud must be THE best way for natural vocabulary building in your children.

But my favourite is math. As a child math was not too difficult until grade 4. I remember it well, long division was the beginning of my math challenges, and everything went downhill from there. But math does not need to be strenuous and there are many real life learning experiences to be had with math in a practical way. Preschool math is definitely the easiest for me to teach naturally and in context, since it isn’t above and beyond my own skill levels ;).

Our five year old counts well, and fairly consistently up to 30, although, I’ll admit she does sometimes jump from 8 to 21. She just needs a bit of coaching to get to 9 and she’s on her way! Did we use a fancy or expensive program to teach her with? No, we’ve just been counting simple every day items together.

At first it was, “We need to get 7 potatoes for lunch, let’s count them together, 1…..2…..3…..4….5…”

Now we’ve progressed to, “K, can you bring me 7 potatoes?” “Okay Mommy, 1…2…3…..4….5..”

We also play “1 Little, 2 Little, 3 Little Missionaries” on fingers or toes to the tune of “1 Little, 2 Little, 3 Little Indians”.

And our 2 year old is learning now too. When I count with K, R joins in, her little toddler voice saying “too, tee” is so sweet to my ears to hear how easily and naturally they learn through imitation.

And what other ways are there to teach our children through informal, natural techniques?  This homeschooling and unschooling blog has some more ideas and suggestions to browse through.

Waldorf Education, Is it Christian?

Every once in awhile on one of my homeschooling lists a dear sister in Christ will ask for opinions about Waldorf education. This is a bit of a controversial topic in Waldorf education circles. Christian educators will claim that Waldorf education is compatible with Christianity, whereas secular educators will claim that Waldorf education is not religiously based. But what do we find when we examine the facts? The foundation of Waldorf education - anthroposophy? Here is what I have found in my own explorations of this educational philosophy, this is an expansion upon what I usually send to a questioning sister regarding Waldorf education.

We haven’t been involved in a waldorf school (and the vast majority of the Waldorf educational impulse takes place within schools, although there is a growing homeschooling movement), but I did research the educational methodology before I was saved as a potential for a homeschooling technique. That was when I was a pagan, the Lord saved me a year and a half ago, and now my perspective is very different than it was then, and here it is for what it’s worth :).

Waldorf education is based upon anthroposophy which, while it seems to include some Christ-like elements, is not Christian. The Christ
Presented in anthroposophy is NOT entirely the Christ of the Bible, he’s a different Jesus. That being said, anthroposophy is part of what pointed me to Christ. In fact, if you delve deeper into anthroposophical teachings and interpretations of the Bible, you will find many frightening, and indeed heretical interpretations of the Bible. The most frightening perhaps are some anthroposophical interpretations of the Gospels that claim that there were two Jesus infants, and that the Bible does in fact support the Eastern philosophy of reincarnation.

Anthroposophists do believe in a form of evolution, and believe that our children go through life stages based on the stages of evolution. Some of these teachings include the small infant child going through the stages of various animals, and ‘casting them off’ as they evolve. How does this fit with the biblical teaching that we are CREATED in God’s image? There is also a strong emphasis on nature ’spirits’, fairies, sylphs etc. which are all presented as being real and actual (again, I can testify from my own experiences that this can plant dangerous seeds in a child’s heart that can later spring into occultism etc.). Jesus is presented as being a sort of abstract ‘light’ bringer, who helps to guide us further in our evolution to Christ consciousness (salvation and being born again have never been presented to my knowledge).

As a result of all these things our family has chosen to no longer be involved in waldorf education or anthroposophy, though we do use some of their lovely crayons, toymaking supplies and arts and crafts materials for the glory of God :). When we became Christians we realized how important it was for all aspects of our lives to center around Christ, particularly in the raising and homeschooling/discipling of our children. Some of the positive aspects of Waldorf education that we have chosen to retain, as they are not anti-Christ or heretical and can be used to glorify God (we can make small dolls to use in acting out family devotions etc.) are: delaying formal education (workbooks etc), focus on play, natural toys (my DH is an excellent wooden toy maker!), natural clothing fibers, singing songs, finger plays, handwork with natural materials etc. which is all very lovely (and also emphasized in Charlotte Mason educational methods). My main caution would be that we do need to look at the root of the teachings (Rudolf Steiner a man who could apparently ’see’ into the
’spirit world’). There is also an emphasis on mythology in various grades again, we have chosen not to expose our little ones to pagan mythology no need. I believe that my early childhood exposures to mythology encouraged my eventual turn to full blown witchcraft and paganism (no this won’t happen to everyone, and yes, my family already had a tendency towards the occult, but the Bible does tell us to put things that are TRUE before our eyes, Philippians 4:8).

So in Waldorf education there is a teaching that truth is to be found in many places, I certainly never encountered anything like John 14:6 in my readings, anthroposophists also believe in reincarnation, karma etc. (it is appointed unto man once to live?) and have some very odd ideas/interpretation about the bible (see above).

I definitely am not an expert and don’t know everything there is to know about the topic, but I would be cautious if anyone were interested in exploring it further. Definitely look beyond the Waldorf-y side of things, and take a look at the anthroposophy that Waldorf education is based upon and see if it rings true to you.
