TOS Crew Review: Wise Alec – Civilize This! Travel Game and Expansion Set

PhotobucketThere is something very special about playing games together as a family that helps to provide motivation for memorizing facts and details that would not necessarily be retained otherwise.  Our family is preparing to embark upon a one-year overview of world-history and we found that Civilize This! from Griddly Games was a perfect pre-study game to arouse interest in world history and the many unique peoples and cultures that populate it.

PhotobucketCivilize This! can be used as a stand-alone game (at home or for travel), or as an add-on to the original Wise Alec Trivia Game  (which comes with a game board and a base set of question cards).  Because our family doesn’t own the base game, we played it together as a stand-alone game.

PhotobucketFirst of all – this game comes with incredible packaging!  It comes in a compact, sturdy, brightly-colored box that closes with a flip over magnet strip along its long side.  Upon opening it, I found that the instructions are printed right on the interior flap of the game box.  All of the cards are provided with their own nesting slots in a plastic liner, and even the custom-dice comes with its own little cuby hole.  I was so impressed I have to say!  I don’t normally get excited about packaging, but this really WORKS for me as an organizationally challenged mom.  No rubber bands or ziploc baggies needed here ladies!

When you are ready to play you can actually just roll the die against the interior side of the box lid because the magnet strip stands up to form a barrier for the die.  When my daughter asked my husband to play this game with her the first time (yep, she went and got it, and ASKED him to play with her the second day the game was in the house) she said, “We can play it ANYWHERE Dad!  You just roll the die right here!”  And so they played it on the couch!  I really like how the travel game design allows for flexibility.  My daughter and I often play it on a tiny scrap of computer desk edge while I’m nursing the baby, it’s very compact, and very doable to get it set up, even one-handed.  The only extra you’ll need is a pencil and paper to keep score.

So, I have a question – have you ever been bored out of your tree when playing games with your children?  Maybe you already knew everything in them, or they were just SO repetitive you could barely stand to play?  Well, although Civilize This! can be played by children as young as eight-years-old (I think this is based upon reading ability), it is very flexible to allow older players like parents teenage siblings to join in.  2-6 players can join in the fun allowing for many different configurations of family members to enjoy this game together.  The game allows for both flexible scoring rules to make older players work harder as well as two levels of question difficulty, the easy level awards three points for each successfully answered trivia question, while the difficult level awards seven points.

The random roll of a color-coded die determines whether or not players get to answer a question drawn from the ‘Ancient Cultures’, ‘Medieval Cultures’, or ‘Modern Cultures’ trivia questions.  While this doesn’t QUITE fit into the popular neo-classical four-year history cycle, you have to admit that it does come fairly close!  The game includes fifty cards for each of the time periods included and 50 ‘Wise Alec’ cards that are essentially wild cards.  Together they provide 150 easy trivia questions and 150 difficult trivia questions, not including the bonus questions included on the Wise Alec cards.  I have found that the questions draw from cultures all around the world and are not restricted to items of interest in the study of Western civilization.  There are questions from Asia, the Americas, and others, along with ones from Europe, Rome, and Greece.

Special colors allow players to select their own category for the question, or at times for another player to select the category.  The purple dot means you get to choose a ‘Wise Alec’ card!  Ornamented with a wise owl wearing an ancient Egyptian headdress, this category is my oldest daughter’s favorite (age 8).  There are funny activities like speaking in another accent, doing dance moves, and many more, along with bonus points awarded for the proper etiquette point listed on the card, and penalty points detracted for poor behavior listed on the card.  There are also brainteasers, tongue twisters, and other fun points-earning activities to mix things up and provide fun bonding activities between family members.

I can see why Civilize This! is a Dr. Toy Winner (100 BEST Children’s Products), it is very well designed, educational, and keeps them coming back for more!  As an aside, Griddly Games the makers of the Wise Alec series of trivia games, is actually based in Canada, just like me.  Its always fun to find and support Canadian companies!  As a result, you can find this game not only online at places like Amazon.com for $14.99, but also at local retailers like Toys R Us – you can find the list of retailers here.

As our study of world history continues I hope that we can eventually move up to the 7-point ‘difficult’ questions as our knowledge base expands.  I have to admit that even my husband and I are sticking with the easy questions for now!  Once we are done with our overview of ancients I might start to bump up the difficulty level for myself, and again when we complete our medieval studies, in that category, and so on.  This flexible, compact, and versatile game has a lot of potential to not only add a fun ‘together’ activity to our homeschooling lifestyle, but also to cement key historical, geographical, and cultural facts in our minds.

Disclosure: A free physical copy of this game was provided for the purposes of review for the TOS Crew.  All opinions and thoughts shared are genuine and my own.

Product Review: Hello Kitty Jeweled Earbud Headphones

hellokittyearbudsI am the mother of four little girls under the age of eight, so how could I resist the ultimate girly-girl earbuds?  Pink and silver and glimmer, these Hello Kitty earbuds were not only super sparkly, but when they arrived I also discovered that they have nice, crisp sound quality, and do an excellent job of filtering out external noises.

Unfortunately, the daughter I was hoping would use them (our 8-year-old iPod lover), found that the earbuds fell out of her ears.  I think that they must be too big for her.  The squishy pink plugs are meant to be compressed by the ear canal and hold the buds firmly in place but they didn’t work for her – she’s hard to please.  SO, guess who has a pair of sparkly pink Hello Kitty earbuds now?  Ahem.  Yes, we’ve traded, and she is now using my plain jane white earbuds.

That is okay by me.  I like the pink shimmery earbuds with rhinestone embellishments.  I appreciate the in-line volume control and silver clip that helps me snug up the earbud cords or loosen them off.  The cord itself is actually more of a fuschia than this picture shows, looks almost braided, and is coated with a transparent vinyl coating.  It adds a bit of contrast to the earbuds.

I haven’t had any problems with the earbuds falling out, and I’m pleased with them, but because of my daughter’s experience, I’ll have to recommend these to the teens and up crowd.  So, I’m 32, that’s okay – I think I look cool ;) .

If you have a penchant for Hello Kitty accessories and electronics you can contribute to the conversation over at SparkleBee where they rely on reader feedback to develop new products.

I received a pair of earbuds in exchange for this review.

Homeschooling Review and Giveaway: No Work Spanish

This is a MamaBuzz review. The product was provided by: No Work Spanish for this review.

CONTEST CLOSED!

Congratulations to April B.!  You have won the No Work Spanish giveaway!  I just sent you an email – please let me know your mailing address within 72 hours so I can have this sent out to you!  Enjoy!

No Work Spanish is a very unique product.  These audio books were written by Anne Emerick, translated from English into Spanish, and put together on CD with both versions being read by bilingual actors.  Each chapter is first read sentence by sentence.  First, a sentence is read in English; then it is read in Spanish.  When the entire chapter has been read sentence by sentence, it is then read all the way through in Spanish.

Designed to help people learn Spanish without the ‘work’ of a traditional language program, No Work Spanish takes a very different approach to language education.  This approach is very modern, and incredibly inductive.  I don’t feel that this approach is all one would need to become fluent in a language, or even to learn to read the language, but I do feel that these audio books have their place.

In order to become fluent every student needs to have a good input of audio from the target language.  In order to really understand the cadences and syntax of a language, one needs to hear it spoken, and No Work Spanish does a great job of this.  Still, I feel it is better suited as a supplement.  Adults who have had former instruction in Spanish will be able to pick up a great deal of their vocabulary again as they brush off those rusty Spanish skills.  However, children will learn much faster with a more traditional, direct-input approach.  I believe it would take quite a while to build a workable vocabulary from such an inductive approach.  I recommend trying out No Work Spanish as an adjunct to such a program, not as a replacement.

In that supplementary role, I think No Work Spanish is great!  It is really a unique product, and my daughter (who hasn’t had any formal Spanish at this point) told me that she could pick out similarities between Spanish and English words just from overhearing me listening to the audio CDs.  I think that is pretty neat!  These are great to listen to when your hands are busy with some other work – when you are driving, washing dishes, cleaning house etc.

I received two audio books to review.  The first is Yaks March on Washington; told from the perspective of a ranch dog, it follows the true story of an Idaho rancher who travels across the US with six yaks on his way to a Tibetan festival.  This is a fun, short story, read by a male voice actor.  The pronunciation of both English and Spanish is clear and authentic (to my ears at least), and the story is told on one CD.  This practical, outdoorsy story will be very appealing to male students.

postergirlPoster Girl was my favorite.  Read over two CDs by a female voice actor, this audio book has the added advantage of some of the vocabulary words being presented BEFORE the chapter is read.  This direct presentation of vocabulary helps listeners pick up the words presented more quickly than the strictly inductive approach of the first story.  This is the No Work Spanish version of a chapter book written for primary grade students (under the same title) and it follows a girl named Paula through her challenges in trying to make a better science poster than the girl who always manages to out-do her.  My eight-year-old was interested in sitting and listening to this one for a while, so I think it’s a great fit for young, female students.

You can listen to free samples of these audio books online, and buy both of the first titles for $21.95 – a very good price.  The audios are also available as MP3 downloads and as separate CD audio books.  Additional titles are also available in the No Work Spanish product line.

You can find No Work Spanish on facebook and at their website.

You can also buy Yaks March on Washington and Poster Girl at Amazon.com!

Product Review and Giveaway: Snap Fashion Jewelry Studio from SmartLab Toys

CONTEST CLOSED - Congratulations to Erica G. who entered her name to win a Cupcake Decorating Studio!  Thanks for your prompt response to my email Erica, enjoy your Cupcake Decorating Studio!

This is a MamaBuzz review. The product was provided by: SmartLab Toys for this review.

Snap-Fashion-Jewelry-StudioThere are few things that my daughters love more than a craft kit.  Everything is included, you just pop it open, and you go.  Honestly, I like craft kits too – they REALLY cut down on the amount of time it takes to get a craft going for my little ones.

When we received the Snap Fashion Jewelry Studio kit in the mail to review, my oldest daughter in particular couldn’t wait to dig in.  She was packing the box around, pouring over the Snap It Up! Idea book that comes with the kit and continually (CONTINUALLY) asking when we could open it.

So, before I get into details about what my children eventually created, here is what you receive in the box:

  • Snap Maker
  • 16 Fabric Circles
  • 12 Jewels
  • Ribbon
  • 5 BasesSnap-Fashion-Supplies
  • 2 Rings
  • 25 Snap Domes Plus Backs
  • Transfer Sheet
  • Connector
  • Tracing Ring
  • Bottle of Glue
  • The Snap It Up! Look Book

So, this art kit is recommended for children seven-and-up, but that didn’t stop the entire family from getting in on the action!  My husband ended up supervising my three oldest girls (8, 5, 2.5 – I know, this kit isn’t recommended for 3 and under, naughty us!) while they made me Mother’s Day gifts from this kit!  (So sweet!)

The darlings went wild!  They used all the bases, both of the rings, the connector (which puts two snaps together), the glue (not all of it), pretty near all of the jewels, and most of the fabric circles!  They made me two rings, and a necklace that used up most of their supplies (they put a LOT of snaps on it!)  and some loose snaps as well from the younger children. Their creations were fairly simple – my children are young.  You can purchase additional supplies to make the more complex projects presented in the idea book, but they were happy to keep things simple.

My smaller girls did have a bit of a tricky time getting their fabric just right.  Some of the edges were a bit loose, and one came undone at the side.  My oldest daughter – who is actually in the recommended age range – did a great job; all of her snaps are tight and sturdy!

With my children going through the supplies so quickly, I automatically wondered if refill kits are available to keep using the snap maker.  Unfortunately there aren’t any refills available at the moment, you need to call SmartLab Toys to order refills on an individual basis.  There MAY be refills available this fall.

You can purchase this kit for $24.99; this is a really fun sleepover, girly night, or sister-bonding project.   Definitely add this to your birthday-party-wishlist that you give to your relatives – any young recipient will be absolutely thrilled!

My olest daughter has been haunting the SmartLab website for days now to learn about all of the other neat kits to make accessories for kids that they have available for budding crafters.  Fellow homeschoolers, take note – you CAN count this as an educational toy, as it fits in well with the arts and crafts/home economics subject areas!

SmartLab Toys is offering Quiverfull Family readers a discount of 25% by using the code: BLOGBUZZ at checkout; from the SmartLab Toys store.  This offer expires June 30, 2011. Be sure to check out The Free Zone! while you are there for great kids’ activities from SmartLab Toys.

Product Review: Zippo Hand Warmer

zippo-handwarmerLiving in Alberta, the winters are long.  Six months at least, maybe seven, it’s April and we still have around two feet of snow on the ground.  Seriously.  We have tried all sorts of hand warmers in our efforts to stave off some of the winter cold.  The disposable heating packs that you bend to get started work for a while, but they are expensive, and you can’t re-use them.

Then we found some re-usable plastic baggies with a metal disc inside.  You bend the disc, there is a chemical reaction, the liquid turns to a solid and produces heat.  We liked that it was re-usable but you had to boil it between uses to return it to the liquid state.  Also, the bags eventually developed holes, and the heat didn’t last for very long.  It was very hot to start and then quickly faded.

When I heard about the Zippo Hand Warmer, I was so excited!  The initial investment isn’t too high ($19.95, $15.00 on Amazon) and it is incredibly re-usable!  You just fill it up with lighter fluid, light it up, and each full filling will run for 12 hours, or until you turn it off.   You can also use less fluid for a shorter burn time if you wish.

It is a bit tricky to light – a Zippo lighter works best for this.  It is very hard to light with a match.  There is some odor after it is first lit, but after that it’s pretty much undetectable.  It is a catalytic heater so there is no open flame.  The heat is steady and gentle when you slip the heater into the fleece bag it comes with.  It is a bit tricky to turn off – there’s no ‘off’ switch.  You need to pry the catalytic lid off to stop the heat.  The burner is rated for around 72 uses, but if you wear it out you can get a replacement for around $8.00, $7 on Amazon.

Our verdict is that we love it!  My husband chops a lot of wood, feeds livestock, build onto our house etc. in the winter and this little Zippo has been great for him!  I’m not sure how long these have been around, but I sure wish we’d known about them sooner!

Mama Bzz Review: Pirose Nursing Cover

This is a Mama Buzz review. The product was provided by Reno Rose for this review.

I just adore the Pirose Nursing Covers from Reno Rose.  If you are tired of the ‘nursing apron’ style cover up, and wouldpirosenursingappreciate a breezy, colorful, stylish option, you should definitely consider the Pirose.  Made from a divinely light and airy breathable, polyester fabric that is machine washable and wrinkle free (yay, no fancy laundering needed after baby spits up!) this drapey nursing shawl compresses down into a handful of fabric that can easily be stored in it’s matching storage bag (included with purchase), tied to a diaper bag handle, draped around your neck as a stylish scarf, or quickly tied on as a headband when you aren’t nursing.

pirosetaejaI received the beautiful “Taeja” print Pirose to review – pinks and purples, bliss!  My little girls are absolutely smitten with this nursing cover, and I often find them trying to wear it as a poncho of sorts.  ”It’s so pretty, Mommy!” they squeal whenever I bring it out.  Even though the fabric is so light and breezy, it provides good coverage for a nursing baby and the bare tummy/nursing bits, no see-through fabrics here!

The BEST thing about the Pirose is that it is not only a functional nursing cover, but it’s also a stylish fashion accessory.  You can actually WEAR it as a shawl, in quite a few configurations when you aren’t using it to nurse – think stylish church accessory!  It can do double-duty and still find a place in your wardrobe after baby is grown!

The Pirose Nursing Cover comes in 10 prints and 3 sizes (the larger sizes are recommended for nursing moms to provide more coverage for baby) and costs $35 – not bad for such a multi-function item.  I guarantee that if you bring one of these delightful confections to a baby shower, everyone will be mightily impressed – particularly the mom-to-be!piroseshawl

Here’s a video to give a better visual of how this all works!

Don’t forget – you can find Reno Rose on Facebook and Twitter!

IntelliGender Test Review Follow Up

Remember way back when…when I was only 11 weeks pregnant with Anne? We took an IntelliGender gender test to see if we could tell if we were having a boy or girl (you can read my original review here).

This is my official update!  When we took our test it told us that we were going to be having a girl, and…we did!  Anne is our beautiful little girl, she’ll be two weeks old tomorrow, and our fourth daughter (so far).

So, for us, the test was accurate :) .

Product Review and Contest: Mend Mark Bracelet

CONTEST CLOSED!

And our winner is Lori! Congratulations! I’ve just sent you an email, please respond within 72 hours and let me know your mailing address. We are in the city right now waiting for our baby to be born, but I will get this out to you once we are back home again :) .

mendmark3

I really like conversation starters that naturally lead to sharing my faith with those around me.  The Mend Mark bracelet is a great way to share your faith in Christ as a natural out-flowing of casual conversation.

Designed to represent the scars Jesus incurred on His wrists during the crucifixion, this one-size-fits-all stretchy type bracelet deposits a round mark on each side of the wrist.  With the word “REMEMBER” on one circular disc and “LOVE” on the other, this bracelet can serve not only to help believers share their faith, but also to remind the wearer of Christ’s sacrificial love – His blood shed on our behalf when we were still sinners.

Unfortunately, I’ve been wearing a double set of wrist braces full time for the past few weeks, so I haven’t been able to give the bracelet a thorough test run yet.  What I do like is that the jewelry is smooth – very important to me as a mom of little ones.  I can’t wear much jewelry when I’m breastfeeding a new baby because it snags and scratches, but this won’t!

However, wearers are warned not to stretch the band too much, because it is made out of a stretchy type of rubber I’m not too sure how well it is going to hold up for in the long run, it does seem a bit delicate.

The bracelet is very beautifully packaged in a gift box along with a brochure explaining the purpose of the bracelet, and that a portion of the sales are going towards the Living Water International project.

BUY AT CHRISTIANBOOK.COM OR FROM MENDMARK.COM!
