Current Curriculum Choices

I’m still working on fleshing this list out, but here’s a start!

One of the things homeschooling moms can’t resist doing is checking to see what their fellow homeschoolers are using to educate their children.  In light of that I wanted to share what we are currently using for my children, we have used and tried a few other things in the past, this just represents what we are CURRENTLY using in our home :) .

Everyone:

Family Bible reading/devotions/coloring in the morning.  We are currently reading Matthew, memorizing the books of the Bible.  My oldest DD and I are memorizing Philippians this year (up to 1:19 so far).

DH (45):

We have slowly but surely started remediating DH’s reading and spelling skills (taught sight words in public school – didn’t ever really work out).  We are working through All About Spelling Level One together to learn segmenting skills and learning to think phonologically.  I hope to work through the entire All About Spelling scope and sequence with him.  I am convinced this will be one of the greatest educational investments of his time that he could ever spend – and all in only fifteen minutes a day!

Me (32):

I am remediating my Latin (two years of high school using Cambridge) using Memoria Press’ First Form Latin.  It is really excellent, thorough, and I am finally REALLY understanding grammar.

Oldest DD (8 this April):

nirvbiblecoverFirst – Bible reading.  She reads her Young Explorers NIrV and I read my chronologically arranged NIV.  We are both reading different portions of scripture.  When we are done our readings we narrate to each other.

Second – Copywork.  We use a variety of copywork pages that we develop for our family business – Bogart Family Resources.  We also use our memory verses as copywork, interesting portions of scripture (she picks), and sometimes literature excerpts from her independent reading.

Third – Spelling.  We completed All About Spelling Level One last year, and are now around 1/2 of the way through All About Spelling Level Two.  Highly recommended.

Fourth – Math: Almost finished Math-U-See Alpha, moving on to Math-U-See Beta.  Daily math drill of around 10 minutes using Math Rider (a fabulous computer game that really works for memorization and mastery, 7-day free trial available)

Fifth – Latin – Memoria Press’ Prima Latina

Sixth – English – Rod and Staff English 2 – over half-way done, started in January.  When completed moving to 3.

Seventh – Content Subjects – Right now we are doing Canada studies using Donna Ward’s Canada, My Country.  Then we are moving onto NOEO Chemistry Level 1.  Then onto Sonlight 1+2 (now B+C).

Second DD (5 this April):

First – Speak With Me speech development books for articulation practice – read aloud together (articulation delays)

Second – All About Reading Pre-1 – I really waffled about this, but in the end I bought it, and it has been SO worth it (despite the sticker shock)

Third – MUS Primer (to start in a month or so)

Third DD (turning 3 this June):

Messing, playing, sitting in on All About Reading, coloring, listening in on family read alouds

Fourth DD (6 months, born in December):

Nursing, cuddles, diaper changes, napping, playing

Welcome!
